Family of Patrick Lyoya, a 26-year-old Congolese refugee, alleges Officer Christopher Schurr used excessive force by shooting Lyoya in the back of the head during a traffic stop on April 4, 2022 in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Schurr was charged with second-degree murder but a May 2025 trial ended in mistrial. Claims of excessive force, unreasonable seizure, and civil rights violations under 42 U.S.C. § 1983. Family seeks $100 million in damages.
