Garner v. City of New York (Eric Garner)

Cause number GARNER-NYC-2015
Court New York City (pre-litigation settlement)
Filed July 13, 2015

Claims

Family of Eric Garner, 43, sought damages for his death on July 17, 2014 after NYPD Officer Daniel Pantaleo placed him in a prohibited chokehold during an arrest for selling untaxed cigarettes on Staten Island. Garner repeated "I can't breathe" 11 times. The medical examiner ruled his death a homicide caused by compression of neck and chest during physical restraint. A grand jury declined to indict Pantaleo.
