RowVaughn Wells, mother of Tyre Nichols, alleges five Memphis Police SCORPION unit officers — Tadarrius Bean, Demetrius Haley, Emmitt Martin III, Desmond Mills Jr., and Justin Smith — used excessive and deadly force during a traffic stop on January 7, 2023, beating Nichols severely. Nichols, 29, died three days later. The $550 million suit alleges the City of Memphis failed to properly train, supervise, and discipline officers in the SCORPION unit.
